Motherhood is a remarkable gift, and while it means something a bit different to every woman, there are some definitions of this unique, challenging, and rewarding job that every mom will relate to.
Let’s explore some of the many roles that define what it means to be a mother, as well as a few ways moms themselves define motherhood.
The numerous roles of mothers
After giving birth or adopting, the lifetime work of motherhood begins. Being a mother means taking on a variety of roles, including:
- Protector
- Friend
- Advocate
- Confidant
- Supporter
- Encourager
- Disciplinarian
- Teacher
- Cheerleader
- Positive role model
The list goes on and on…
Being a mother as defined by moms
The folks at the Mom’s Choice Awards asked 18 moms what it means to them to be a mother. We’ve compiled bits and pieces of some of the responses and included some of our own thoughts below.
- Always being there for your children, helping and supporting them through everything life throws their way
- Loving your child unconditionally
- Having your patience tested around the clock
- Working tirelessly to ensure your children are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed as adults later in life
- Providing a safe and secure environment
- Guiding your children toward their goals and values
- Being completely and totally overwhelmed (in the best possible way) by love, joy, responsibility, and selflessness
- Having a little person walking around with your heart and soul in the palms of her precious little hands
- Seeing the world and all its possibilities through your children’s eyes
- Constantly working to become the kindest, most generous, and best version of yourself to be someone your children can look up to
One response we just had to include in its entirety:
“Parenting is raising a child to be the best they can be. Being a mother is different. It means providing that indescribable feeling of comfort, no matter the age of the child. It’s being that person you call on who makes you feel better and doesn’t even need to say anything.” – Wendy Hunter, MD
Perfectly said.
