Why Evidence-Based Education Is Important for Pregnant People and New Parents

At CCI, we strive to produce evidence-based education tools that are regularly reviewed and updated. Why do we do this? Because it’s better for your patients.

There is so much for a pregnant person and new parent to learn, and the amount of available information can be overwhelming. By providing patients with current, evidence-based best practices, you are helping them to make informed decisions for their care. They can then choose interventions that suit them and their beliefs, rather than assume that the standard practices at their birth facility are best for them.

Health care facilities may provide care and interventions based on tradition or practices that had a strong rationale at the time they were developed. However, many of those interventions have since been updated or even proven in scientific studies to be ineffective, in some cases actually causing unnecessary discomfort or pain to patients.

That’s why it’s so important for patients to educate themselves. Unfortunately, many patients simply look online for free information. What they may not know is that a certain article or website or blog entry is sponsored by a manufacturer, company or organization who benefits from readers believing their information is not only correct, but the best option for them. This could drive readers to buy a product or make a decision based on the author’s values, not scientific evidence.

CCI’s materials are carefully researched and written in-house by Becky Law, MA, BSN, RN, and Julie Smith, MS, BSN, RN. Both of these health care professionals have decades of extensive hands-on experience in childbirth education, maternal nursing care, perinatal care, newborn care and all aspects of labor and birth. They are both LCCEs, and Becky is also an IBCLC. The pair have a wealth of experience educating and aiding breastfeeding mothers.

Becky and Julie continually monitor updates from trusted organizations such as the American Association of Pediatrics (AAP); The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG); and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses(AWHONN)for the latest science-based research and recommendations. Other resources they rely on are the Cochran Review, recent nursing textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles that have been rigorously reviewed, and information from respected experts and researchers in the maternal and childcare fields.

After their careful research and writing, graphic designer Nasim Swope creates the design and layout of our materials. Her Master’s degree in Design and years of experience allow her to take the well-written but technical information from Becky and Julie and craft a thoughtfully planned layout that uses imagery, icons and infographics to aid readers in understanding concepts and information that may be unfamiliar to them. In addition, her design skills make our materials appealing and easy to digest.

By providing families with evidence-based education, they learn information that is current and unbiased, and therefore they are able to make informed decisions that best suit their needs and beliefs. We believe this is the best possible way to support both you and your patients on the journey from pregnancy to birth and beyond.
